PPG has successfully completed its 200th vessel dry docking using electrostatic application for marine fouling control coatings, nearly three years after launching the technique in the global shipping market. The milestone was achieved on the Stena Britannica, a passenger and roll-on/roll-off cargo vessel operated by Stena Line, at the EDR Antwerp shipyard in Belgium.
The PPG SIGMAGLIDE 2390 fouling release coating, a silicone-based and biocide-free solution, was applied using an electrostatic spray gun. This innovative method directs coating particles onto a grounded metal surface, ensuring even coverage and uniform film layers, which enhance smoothness and fouling control performance.
Compared to traditional airless spray techniques, electrostatic application improves paint transfer efficiency while significantly reducing overspray, material waste, and carbon emissions. This method also offers Scope 3 carbon life cycle savings, as it minimizes the need for raw material extraction, manufacturing, and transportation.
Additionally, vessels coated with high-performance, low-friction solutions like PPG Sigmaglide 2390 help ship owners lower fuel consumption and reduce Scope 1 emissions, further contributing to sustainability in maritime operations.
