The State of Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Transport, participated in the 34th Session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly in London, with Minister H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulla bin Mohammed Al-Thani leading the Qatari delegation. The assembly addressed critical issues concerning maritime navigation safety, security, and environmental protection, alongside elections for the IMO’s Executive Council.
In his address, the Minister emphasized the IMO’s pivotal role in shaping global maritime transportation and highlighted Qatar’s strategic focus on its maritime industry as part of its national transportation framework. He underscored the country’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving port efficiency, and aligning national legislation with international safety and environmental standards.
The Minister also pointed to Qatar’s advancements in training and qualifying national cadets in the maritime field, notably through the recent establishment of a Maritime Training and Simulation Center at the University of Doha for Science and Technology. This center aims to equip Qatari professionals with cutting-edge skills in line with global standards.
Additionally, Qatar has developed a national action plan to protect marine resources and established a multidisciplinary committee to enhance long-term management of these resources, aligning with the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. During the assembly, the Minister held discussions with various international officials to explore bilateral cooperation in transport and maritime sectors.
