Asian countries are strengthening their maritime governance to effectively tackle emerging challenges and ensure that seas are used for legitimate purposes. This was highlighted by S. Paramesh, the Director General of the Indian Coast Guard, during the 20th anniversary celebration of the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP), which has played a pivotal role in maintaining piracy-free oceans.
The event, held in Singapore, showcased India’s significant contributions as a founding member of ReCAAP, which promotes ocean safety and freedom through collaborative efforts among nations. During the celebrations, Paramesh announced plans to modernize the Indian Coast Guard fleet with new ships and helicopters equipped with advanced technology.
Singapore’s Senior Minister Murali Pillai commended ReCAAP’s effective model for combating piracy, emphasizing its positive impact on global maritime trade. He noted Asia’s essential role in managing substantial trade volumes, underscoring the importance of regional collaboration. Ongoing efforts with regional partners aim to ensure secure sea lanes throughout the Indo-Pacific region, reinforcing the commitment to safe and legitimate maritime activities.
