On December 3, the Romanian military destroyed a maritime drone identified as a Sea Baby, which posed a navigation threat in the Black Sea. The incident, announced by the Ministry of National Defence, reflects heightened concerns over shipping safety amid ongoing conflict related to the war in Ukraine. The drone was located approximately 36 nautical miles east of Constanta.
Although the Romanian Defence Ministry confirmed the drone’s identification as a Sea Baby, they refrained from disclosing its country of origin. Meanwhile, the Security Service of Ukraine did not comment on the matter prior to publication. The rise in attacks on Russian-linked vessels, reportedly by Ukrainian forces, has led to increased insurance rates for shipping operations in this vital corridor for grain and oil transport.
The Romanian Defence Ministry also announced that their intervention team received clearance to neutralize the threat, carrying out a controlled detonation around 1 p.m. The situation has prompted discussions on maritime safety, with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte addressing the issue following recent attacks.
To combat the dangers posed by drifting mines in the Black Sea, Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey have established a joint task force. Since the conflict began, approximately 150 mines have been discovered and neutralized in these waters.
