Shipping companies need to enhance their data collection, structuring, and utilization methods to remain competitive in a more regulated and digital landscape, as highlighted by recent research from Lloyd’s Register (LR) and OneOcean. The report, titled “Mastering Maritime Data for Competitive Advantage,” reveals that although the maritime sector generates vast amounts of operational data, much of it is fragmented and poorly organized. This lack of standardization and quality hampers digital transformation efforts, especially as regulatory frameworks like the EU Emissions Trading System demand reliable data for compliance and decision-making.

The study indicates that the industry has significant progress to make before digital tools can reach their full potential. LR’s Digital Maturity Index shows that data standardization is currently rated at 2.45 out of 4, while overall digital maturity sits at 2.1. Many shipowners face challenges not in data generation, but in ensuring that the data is of high quality and can be effectively utilized across operations. The report emphasizes the need for improved data governance and integration to unlock the value of existing information.

Moreover, advancements in vessel connectivity and cloud platforms are transforming data flow between ships and shore. However, the report warns that emerging technologies like artificial intelligence rely heavily on data quality; without proper governance, they could exacerbate inaccuracies. The research concludes that the future of maritime digitalization hinges on collaboration among shipowners, technology providers, regulators, and other stakeholders. Effective data management will be crucial for navigating regulatory changes and optimizing operations in this evolving landscape.
