Shipping company Stena Bulk is nearing completion of its plan to reflag five Suezmax tankers under the Swedish flag. The first vessel, Stena Sunrise, is set for reflagging in Singapore at the end of July 2025, having met the preparatory deadline of June 30. This achievement is attributed to the strong collaboration with Swedish authorities and trade unions throughout the process.
This initiative underscores Stena Bulk’s commitment to enhancing the Swedish maritime sector, capitalizing on recent reforms that have made Sweden a more competitive flag state. Changes such as the elimination of stamp duty on ship registration and improvements to the Swedish Ship Register have paved the way for shipowners to invest long-term under the Swedish flag.
Currently, Sweden has no Suezmax tankers registered, and Stena Bulk’s move to flag five vessels will address this gap, bolstering the country’s maritime resilience amid a complex geopolitical landscape. Following Stena Sunrise, the remaining four tankers will be reflagged strategically based on operational and administrative considerations.
The presence of these vessels will not only strengthen Sweden’s maritime sector but also create new opportunities for local seafarers and enhance Sweden’s influence in global shipping discussions.
