Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV), a French leader in testing and certification, emphasizes the need to rethink global shipping financing and operations to meet decarbonization targets. Matthieu de Tugny, BV’s Executive Vice-President, has released a new book, “Toward a Sustainable Blue Economy,” advocating for a transformative approach to protect the environment while achieving sustainability in shipping.

The book, a sequel to BV’s 2022 publication, highlights advancements in technology that can significantly reduce carbon emissions. However, the industry’s reliance on traditional fuel pricing presents a barrier to transitioning away from fossil fuels. De Tugny stresses the importance of moving beyond risk-averse financial practices to embrace green financing linked to climate performance.

He calls for increased collaboration among industry stakeholders to challenge existing operational models. Classification societies like BV play a critical role in this transformation, offering expertise and guidelines to facilitate investment in clean technologies. De Tugny asserts that achieving a sustainable blue economy requires a comprehensive approach that not only focuses on decarbonization but also reinvents the systems reliant on fossil fuels.

The book serves as both a roadmap and a rallying cry for the maritime industry to adapt amid environmental challenges, underscoring the urgent need for collective action to protect the oceans and the planet.
