Swedish shipping company Furetank has secured access to large volumes of biogas, enabling its fleet operating in the European Union to run entirely on renewable energy. This milestone follows a decade-long effort to transition to sustainable operations through a mass-balanced biomethane supply system. The newly introduced FuelEU Maritime regulation allows biogas to be injected at one European gas grid location and extracted at another, akin to green electricity systems.

This regulatory framework ensures Furetank can utilize biomethane to power all its vessels in European waters through 2025, with most of the fleet already using renewable fuels. At the recent Donsö Shipping Meet, the vessel Fure Valö showcased its fully fossil-fuel-free operations, utilizing renewable biodiesel HVO100 for ignition, moving away from traditional marine gasoil.

Viktoria Höglund, Furetank’s Sustainability Strategist, emphasized that achieving complete fossil-free operations has been a core objective since the company converted its first vessel to gas propulsion in 2015. Gothenburg Port views Furetank’s progress as a significant achievement that could inspire broader adoption of sustainable practices across the shipping industry.

Therese Jällbrink, Head of Renewable Energy at Gothenburg Port AB, noted that regulations like FuelEU Maritime are driving early investments in alternative fuels. The port has also initiated a green corridor partnership with Rotterdam, aiming for entirely fossil-free maritime transport, with Furetank playing a pivotal role in this collaborative effort to address cost disparities and promote standardized regulations.
