The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) in the UK has launched a new Innovation Hub in Southampton with the aim of driving advancements in ocean technology and supporting sustainable growth in the blue economy. With a £200,000 investment, the facility will act as a hub for innovation in marine autonomous systems (MAS) and the broader blue economy, bringing together researchers, businesses, and entrepreneurs to propel progress in the ocean and maritime sectors.
The new Innovation Hub boasts cutting-edge facilities including meeting spaces, hot desking areas, break out rooms, and dining zones spread over 304 sq m of floor space. During the launch event at the Ocean Business conference and exhibition, over 50 representatives from commercial, research, and academic sectors across the UK and beyond attended to witness the unveiling of the hub. Mark Hamson, the Innovation Hub Manager, highlighted the potential of the ocean for sustainable economic development, emphasizing the importance of innovation in sectors like fisheries, aquaculture, tourism, maritime transport, and renewable energy.
Operating under NOC Innovations, the hub builds upon the former Marine Robotics Innovation Centre (MRIC) at NOC, expanding its services and facilities to support a wider range of organizations in the ocean and maritime sectors. The goal is to double Innovation Hub membership from the current 40 members. Already, the hub has attracted new members such as The Ocean Conservation Trust, a global Ocean conservation charity. CEO Ian McFadzen praised the impact of NOC’s Innovation Hub in fostering economic resilience, innovation, and sustainability, and bringing businesses together for a prosperous and sustainable future.
