The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, announced the commencement of a port modernization program in collaboration with the Nigerian Ports Authority. The pilot projects for this program are Apapa and Tincan Island ports. This initiative aims to reconstruct existing port infrastructure to improve vessel and cargo turnaround time. Oyetola made this announcement during the 3rd Maritime Transportation Industry Breakfast in Lagos, themed ‘Prospects for accelerated growth and other matters arising’.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by the maritime sector, Oyetola emphasized the need for a multifaceted approach to position Nigeria as a leading maritime hub in Africa. He highlighted infrastructure deficits, security concerns, and environmental issues as key challenges. The minister also stressed the importance of integrating road, rail, and inland waterways connectivity to the ports to enhance efficiency and competitiveness in marine transport.
In addition to the port modernization program, the ministry is implementing initiatives such as the development of the Port Community System, an electronic platform to streamline processes for stakeholders in the sector. Oyetola mentioned the Turtle Excluder Devices certification exercise to align with global conservation efforts and regulations. This initiative aims to open doors to new markets that prioritize eco-friendly products and ensure better prices and demand for fishers’ catch. The ministry is also focused on strengthening regulatory frameworks, enhancing the capacity of local fishers, and encouraging private sector participation in modern aquaculture techniques for the long-term viability of the industry.
