On Wednesday, the US Treasury Department announced extensive sanctions against over 115 Iranian individuals, entities, and vessels, marking a significant escalation in its “maximum pressure” campaign following attacks on key nuclear facilities in Tehran. This latest round targets maritime interests linked to Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani, son of influential military advisor Ali Shamkhani. Officials highlighted it as the most comprehensive sanctions package aimed at Iran since 2018, part of the Trump administration’s efforts to further isolate Tehran.

The Treasury accused Shamkhani of leading a vast network of container ships and tankers that facilitate the global trade of Iranian and Russian oil, leveraging personal connections and corruption in Tehran to amass billions. A substantial portion of these profits reportedly supports the Iranian regime.

The sanctions encompass 15 shipping companies, 52 vessels, and 12 individuals across 17 countries, from Panama to Italy and Hong Kong. A US official indicated that the measures would significantly hinder Iran’s oil sales, with current exports already reduced to about 1.2 million barrels per day, down from 1.8 million earlier this year due to previous sanctions.

This latest action further restricts Iran’s maritime operations amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
