A U.S. delegation is engaging in talks with Russian officials to push for progress towards a ceasefire in the Black Sea and a broader cessation of violence in the ongoing war in Ukraine. The delegation, led by Andrew Peek from the White House National Security Council and Michael Anton from the State Department, met with Ukrainian diplomats before sitting down with the Russians. The discussions aim to achieve a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea to facilitate the free flow of shipping.
The talks also cover other important topics such as the “line of control” between Russia and Ukraine, verification measures, peacekeeping efforts, and confidence-building measures like the return of Ukrainian children taken by Russia. The U.S. delegation is working towards a comprehensive ceasefire agreement by April 20, with the hope of bringing an end to the conflict that has caused significant casualties and displacement in Ukraine.
Despite efforts to negotiate a ceasefire, both Russia and Ukraine have reported continued strikes, with Russian forces advancing slowly in eastern Ukraine. The U.S. special envoy, Steve Witkoff, who met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, believes that Putin desires peace and does not have ambitions to take over all of Europe. The U.S. is committed to ending Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War Two and is working towards a resolution that benefits all parties involved.
