The Australian Government has introduced the Maritime Skills and Training Initiative (MSTI), a new program designed to provide sea time access for up to 20 trainee and cadet seafarers. With an investment of $13.8 million over four years, this initiative aims to tackle skill shortages and enhance workforce capabilities within the maritime sector by offering financial grants to employers.

The MSTI is a significant outcome of the 2023 Strategic Fleet Taskforce Report, facilitating the next generation of seafarers in completing the necessary sea time for international certification. This commitment reflects the Australian Government’s dedication to ensuring that the maritime sector remains a vital contributor to economic growth, maritime safety, and sustainability in the shipping industry.
