The United Nations Human Rights Council has adopted a landmark resolution dedicated to protecting the rights of seafarers, the first of its kind. This resolution seeks to eliminate discrimination and unfair labor practices faced by seafarers, ensuring a safe work environment, equitable employment terms, decent living conditions aboard ships, health protection, medical care, welfare measures, and social security.
This resolution’s importance is underscored by the fact that 1.9 million seafarers are part of the global merchant fleet. It represents a significant step for governments, international organizations, and stakeholders in safeguarding the well-being of seafarers worldwide.
The resolution acknowledges the challenges seafarers encounter at sea, where their safety and well-being are often at risk. It also calls for increased cooperation among states, shipowners, seafarers’ representatives, and international organizations to protect the rights and dignity of seafarers globally, reinforcing that safe and decent living and working conditions at sea are fundamental human rights.
