Captain Ian Finley, a seasoned maritime professional with over 63 years of experience, was awarded the prestigious International Maritime Prize for 2023. Nominated by the Cook Islands Government, Captain Finley has been a dedicated delegate to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for more than three decades. He was honored at the annual IMO Awards Ceremony in London on December 2, 2024, following the Maritime Safety Committee session.
Throughout his career, Captain Finley has played a crucial role in shaping maritime legislation and fostering international cooperation within the IMO. His nomination highlighted his active participation in developing safety, environmental, and legal regulations since 1995. Recognizing his invaluable contributions, IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez praised Captain Finley’s passion and dedication to advancing maritime goals.
In his acceptance speech, Captain Finley humbly acknowledged the collaborative efforts of his colleagues over the years. His extensive background in the maritime industry, from sailing as a Master Mariner to serving as a Permanent Representative for the Cook Islands, has earned him respect and admiration within the maritime community. His advocacy for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and commitment to enhancing technical cooperation have further solidified his reputation as a stalwart diplomat in maritime affairs.
