The captain of a K Line-operated ferry is facing prosecution after a grounding incident on the island of Hokkaido in July 2024. The ferry, named Silver Breeze, struck a breakwater while arriving at Tomakomai, causing significant damage to the vessel’s bow. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the 140 passengers and crew onboard at the time of the accident.

Following an investigation by the Japan Coast Guard, it was determined that the grounding was due to human error, specifically the captain’s failure to confirm the ship’s position and course. Despite being aware of the breakwater, the captain allegedly did not verify the ship’s location using radar or electronic charts. The master admitted to causing the accident during questioning, citing his own steering error.

The Japan Coast Guard has referred the case to a prosecutor, with the captain facing accusations of professional negligence resulting in danger to traffic. The Silver Breeze, a 2022-built ro/pax ferry operated by K Line’s Silver Ferry division, connects Honshu’s northeasternmost province with Hokkaido. The vessel was built by Naikai Zosen for shipowner Tsugaru Kaikyo Ferry and is the last in a series of five ferries.
