The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) recently convened with Gulf State representatives to address the severe impact of the ongoing conflict on seafarers and shipping operations in the region. Four weeks into the conflict, which has resulted in fatalities among seafarers and attacks on vessels, approximately 20,000 seafarers remain stranded, facing dire conditions while unable to transit the Strait of Hormuz.

The discussions aimed to establish urgent initiatives to support affected ships and crews. Key proposals included implementing a reporting mechanism through the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for vessels to communicate resupply concerns, recognizing seafarers as essential workers to prioritize their replacement onboard, and facilitating the safe disembarkation of seafarers for medical reasons.

Gulf State representatives assured that their governments are committed to supporting seafarers and emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to prevent feelings of abandonment among crew members. They acknowledged that the current situation differs from earlier phases, necessitating tailored measures, including logistical support for stranded ships and easing crew changes.

Additionally, they indicated that exceptional measures may be enacted for expiring crew contracts and medical certifications, similar to those during the COVID-19 pandemic. Collaboration with the IMO is essential to establish a safe maritime corridor for ship evacuations and ensure the safety of seafarers in the Strait.
