The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has launched the Deck Procedures Guide, a crucial resource aimed at enhancing maritime safety by focusing on deck operations. This guide fills a significant gap in existing maritime guidance, complementing the Bridge Procedures Guide and Engine Room Procedures Guide to create a comprehensive suite of operational resources for shipboard departments.
The guide covers a wide range of deck activities, including cargo operations, mooring, anchoring, and bunkering. It also addresses compliance with the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code and the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code. Notably, it includes an interactive risk assessment tool and checklists to support safe operations, with a chapter dedicated to alternative fuel bunkering, developed in collaboration with industry leaders.
John Stawpert, Principal Director – Marine at ICS, emphasized the importance of clear, validated procedures for deck operations, stating that the guide equips crews with essential knowledge, including considerations for alternative fuels. Developed through extensive collaboration with various maritime stakeholders, the guide aims to standardize best practices while allowing organizations to adapt procedures to their specific needs.
Recommended for all deck crew members and shoreside safety teams, the Deck Procedures Guide serves as a vital tool for improving safety standards and operational efficiency across the global fleet.
