The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) predicts an increase in job opportunities for Filipino seafarers in the near future. This positive outlook follows the expansion and opening of local offices for MSC Crewing Services Philippines and Philippine Transmarine Carriers in Parañaque City. DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac expressed optimism about the benefits this development will bring to seafarers. He attended the inauguration of the local offices on Nov. 26, along with Undersecretary Patricia Caunan.
MSC Cruises Chief Operating Officer Elia Congiu announced plans for future expansion that could create opportunities for 50,000 crew members worldwide, with 10,000 jobs specifically allocated for Filipinos. Congiu praised the dedication and hard work of Filipino crew members, emphasizing their essential role in delivering exceptional guest experiences. Over the past five years, MSC has employed over 9,000 Filipinos, with 85 percent of them still working for the company.
PTC Group CEO Gerardo Borromeo affirmed their commitment to partnering with the government to provide career opportunities for seafarers. The new offices of MSC will serve as a local hub for talent scouting, training, and development for seafarers. Cacdac also addressed concerns regarding the Magna Carta for Seafarers in the cruise sector, ensuring that issues would be addressed accordingly. These developments signify a promising future for Filipino seafarers in the maritime industry.
