In a speech at the Indian Maritime University (IMU) convocation in Chennai, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal congratulated the 2,196 graduates, emphasizing their entry into a revitalized maritime sector crucial to India’s economic and strategic goals. He noted that careers in shipping, logistics, and green maritime technologies are now diverse and highly sought after, driven by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
Since 2014, India’s ports have undergone significant modernization, resulting in impressive turnaround times and placing nine Indian ports among the top 100 globally. Major projects, like the Vadhavan port, are set to enhance cargo movement, with inland waterways seeing a sevenfold increase in traffic over the past decade. The government envisions a “Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047,” aimed at investing ₹80 lakh crore in various maritime initiatives.
Sonowal highlighted the historic ₹70,000 crore package to boost shipbuilding, supported by the Maritime Development Fund. This initiative aims to create 25–30 lakh jobs in shipbuilding, logistics, and related industries, enhancing India’s position as a top global supplier of trained seafarers. He urged graduates to embrace ethical practices and innovation as they take on leadership roles in the maritime domain.
