South Korean and Japanese coast guards have resumed a joint rescue operation for a missing Indonesian crew member near Dokdo Island. The individual, in his twenties, fell overboard from a fishing vessel approximately 195 kilometers northeast of Dokdo at around 11:15 a.m. on Friday.
The search effort, which began at sunrise, includes a 5,000-ton South Korean vessel, a 1,250-ton Japanese vessel, and a civilian fishing boat. Officials have emphasized their commitment to conducting a thorough search, highlighting the cooperation between the two nations in locating the missing crew member in the waters between them.
This incident follows previous maritime tragedies involving Indonesian crew members. In March 2024, the South Korean-flagged chemical tanker Keoyoung Sun capsized off Yamaguchi, Japan, resulting in eight fatalities among its 11 crew members, including eight Indonesians. One Indonesian was reported to have survived.
Additionally, in November 2024, the fishing vessel Geumseongsusan 135 sank near Jeju, with 27 crew members aboard. Although 15 were rescued, 12 individuals, including Indonesians, remain unaccounted for.
