Intermanager, a key organization in ship management, is advocating against the criminalization of seafarers as the global Day of the Seafarer approaches on June 25th. They stress that no seafarer should face criminal charges without substantial evidence, asserting that “no individual should be prosecuted based on unfounded allegations.”
Captain Kuba Szymanski, Secretary General of Intermanager, criticized the current treatment of seafarers, pointing out that being labeled as criminals during investigations is unacceptable. This sentiment echoes the International Transport Association, which highlights the wrongful accusations many seafarers face during maritime incidents, where they can be held accountable for pollution or accidents despite having no involvement.
This year’s International Maritime Organization (IMO) campaign aims to foster an environment where bullying and harassment at sea are intolerable. Intermanager emphasizes the need for strict enforcement of existing regulations to achieve this objective. Szymanski noted that harassment poses significant safety risks, akin to other life-threatening situations at sea, and real enforcement is necessary.
As preparations for the Day of the Seafarer take place, Intermanager continues to advocate for enhanced safety protocols and the legal protection of seafarers, underlining their essential contributions to the maritime industry.
