The Nigerian government has issued a warning to the maritime sector regarding harassment and bullying of workers. During the 2025 Seafarers Day celebration in Port Harcourt, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, emphasized the need for a respectful work environment. He stated that harassment undermines individual well-being and the industry’s reputation, asserting that such behavior has no place in maritime operations.

Oyetola highlighted the government’s commitment to enhancing the seafaring profession through improved training, capacity-building initiatives, and adherence to international standards, including compliance with the STCW Convention. He assured that Nigeria is focused on ensuring fair treatment and safety for seafarers while regulating recruitment agencies and enhancing working conditions.

Additionally, the minister noted the recent Collective Bargaining Agreement by NIMASA, which aims to establish fair wages and working conditions. He encouraged shipowners and crewing agencies to update operational manuals in light of new amendments to the Maritime Labour Convention, which recognize seafarers as key workers and enhance protections against harassment.

Dayo Mobereola, NIMASA’s director-general, acknowledged the significant contributions of Nigerian seafarers to both domestic and international trade. He urged seafarers to report grievances without fear, reinforcing NIMASA’s commitment to preventing harassment on Nigerian-flagged vessels.
