On December 20, the Nigerian maritime sector received a significant boost as NLNG Shipping and Marine Services Ltd (NSML) selected 21 cadets for overseas sea-time training. This initiative comes alongside a commitment from Nigerian ship owners who have allocated over 60 sea-time slots for cadets from the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron. This collaboration aims to tackle the shortage of certified seafarers both locally and globally.
During the induction ceremony, NSML revealed that 13 cadets from MAN and eight from the Nigerian Maritime University (NMU) in Delta State were chosen through a national screening process for training that leads to a Certificate of Competency (CoC). NSML’s Managing Director, Mr. Abdulkadir Ahmed, emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing local maritime skills and standards to support industry growth and economic development.
The Maritime Centre of Excellence (MCOE), which oversees the cadetship program, has secured UK accreditation for several courses aimed at improving maritime education. Plans are underway to transform this facility into an advanced training center for Africa. The induction event was attended by various maritime stakeholders who encouraged the cadets to maintain professionalism during their training abroad.
This initiative marks a revival of a long-standing relationship between NSML and MAN, dating back to the 1990s, when many cadets completed their sea time with the company. Maritime experts have praised these efforts as a crucial step toward strengthening Nigeria’s seafaring workforce and enhancing its global shipping relevance.
