Seafarers are encouraged to consider careers in the offshore industry, where the demand for dynamic positioning (DP) professionals is on the rise, especially with the growth of offshore wind activities in the Philippines and Asia. Marlon Roño, president of Magsaysay People Resources Corp. (MPRC), highlights that the offshore sector offers attractive salaries and shorter contracts compared to conventional shipping.
Seafarers in oil and gas platforms or wind farms often earn higher wages due to the challenging work conditions and specialized skills required. For instance, a master or ship captain can earn between $10,000 to $15,000 monthly, while junior officers make between $3,000 to $6,000. The rotation system for offshore workers typically involves three months onboard followed by one month of shore leave, allowing for a more flexible work schedule compared to the longer contracts in conventional shipping.
Dynamic positioning is vital for offshore operations, as it enables vessels to maintain precise positioning against environmental factors. Roño notes that the offshore industry is rapidly evolving due to technological advancements, requiring a different skill set than that of traditional vessels.
