Authorities are contemplating stricter regulations for Filipino seafarers navigating the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in response to rising vessel attacks. Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Cacdac stated that while the current policy, prohibiting seafarers from boarding previously attacked vessels, remains in effect, more severe measures may be introduced if attacks increase.
Cacdac highlighted the importance of monitoring the intensity of these attacks, particularly following the recent assault on the Greek-flagged bulk carrier MV Eternity C, which had 21 Filipino crew members onboard. He noted that the incident involved "simultaneous and targeted" attacks.
The DMW has reiterated its directive for shipowners to reroute vessels away from high-risk areas and to report any planned passages through the Red Sea or Gulf of Aden. Cacdac emphasized the seafarers’ right to refuse sailing in dangerous zones without jeopardizing their employment. Manning agencies are tasked with ensuring that seafarers are fully informed about risks before deployment, allowing them to make informed decisions regarding their safety.
