New Delhi: Despite rising tensions in West Asia, many Indian seafarers are actively working in the Gulf region. The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) has confirmed that around 23,000 Indian seafarers are currently aboard various vessels in the Persian Gulf and surrounding waters, contributing to global maritime trade.
In light of recent violence, the DGS has implemented several safety measures to protect these seafarers. This includes issuing maritime security advisories that instruct shipping companies and Indian-flagged vessels to enhance vigilance and safety protocols. Additionally, a 24/7 monitoring system is in place through the DG Shipping Communication Centre, in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs and local maritime authorities. Shipping companies have also been directed to establish emergency contact mechanisms for seafarers and their families.
The DGS is actively reviewing voyage planning and crew safety, especially for vessels navigating sensitive areas. In cases of casualties, the Directorate ensures that contractual and statutory entitlements for the seafarers and their families are upheld, including compensation and repatriation assistance, in coordination with local authorities and Indian missions.
Furthermore, diplomatic efforts are underway to prevent incidents and facilitate the swift repatriation of deceased seafarers’ bodies. The DGS maintains close cooperation with Indian embassies and maritime administrations to address these challenges effectively. Immediate communication with local authorities and search and rescue agencies is also prioritized to ensure timely recovery operations.
