The Government of India has recently released a white paper demonstrating its strong commitment to the well-being of seafarers and the maritime industry. The white paper highlights the collaboration between the Directorate General of Shipping of India and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences to conduct vital studies aimed at improving the mental health and overall well-being of Indian seafarers. The industry praised the government’s comprehensive approach towards enhancing seafarers’ welfare. The industry leaders emphasized the importance of incorporating mental health resilience training into mandatory courses for Indian seafarers to better equip them in handling the unique stresses of life at sea.

With an estimated 250,000 Indian seafarers, comprising 160,000 on cargo ships and 90,000 on cruise liners, isolation emerges as a significant factor contributing to mental health issues among seafarers. It is reported that over 25% of seafarers experience severe depression, with nearly 6% of deaths at sea attributed to suicide, mainly due to the stress and strain of their professional duties.

Recognizing the pressing need to address mental health challenges and reduce the incidence of suicides among Indian seafarers, a prominent organization has pledged to collaborate with government bodies in India and other stakeholders within the Indian maritime industry. The company aims to work collectively towards implementing effective measures to curb the prevalence of mental illness and suicides on cargo and cruise ships, ensuring the well-being and safety of Indian seafarers remain a top priority.
