The situation surrounding the North Sea incident yesterday is rapidly evolving, with reports that one seafarer has been detained and arrested by the UK police. The individual, who remains unidentified, is currently in custody as the investigation continues. The arrest was made on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter in connection with the collision that occurred. The Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Superintendent Craig Nicholson, confirmed the arrest but did not disclose the position of the individual or the vessel they were from.

Following the conclusion of search operations for the missing crew member of the vessel “Solong,” HM Coastguard reported that one seafarer was still missing. The charges of manslaughter were set after the search ended, and the UK’s Minister of Transport, Mike Kane, sadly announced that the missing sailor is presumed deceased. The focus now shifts to the 36 survivors of the incident, who have received medical attention and been relocated to local hotels for support.

The UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has initiated a preliminary assessment to determine the causes of the collision. They are gathering information and collaborating with authorities in the United States and Portugal, the flag states of the vessels involved. Humberside Police have also launched a criminal investigation into the collision, working closely with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. The police are leading the investigation into any potential criminal offenses, while efforts continue to understand the full circumstances of the incident.
