Data from the International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) reveals a significant increase in mental health-related inquiries through their SeafarerHelp helpline. Established over 20 years ago, SeafarerHelp provides a confidential, multilingual support service for seafarers, addressing challenges like abandonment and harassment. The introduction of high-speed internet has transformed how seafarers access this support; in early 2025, 38% of contacts were made via live chat and 31% through WhatsApp, marking a shift from traditional phone calls.

This evolution in communication reflects not only the changing nature of inquiries but also a growing awareness of mental health issues at sea. In the first half of 2025, 15.5% of contacts were related to mental health difficulties, a notable rise from previous years. Stress, anxiety, and low mood were the primary concerns, often exacerbated by challenging work environments and interpersonal issues. Alarmingly, 9% of those reaching out reported suicidal thoughts, highlighting the urgent need for ongoing support.

ISWAN’s experience underscores the mental health challenges inherent in seafaring life, characterized by isolation and high-stress conditions. The maritime sector must continue to enhance awareness and provide adequate support to seafarers, addressing evolving challenges such as crew dynamics and technological changes. As the maritime environment transforms, so too must the methods of support available to ensure the well-being of seafarers and their families.
