Seafarers operating ferries from Patras and Igoumenitsa have initiated a 24-hour strike starting Sunday at 6 a.m., protesting the government’s neglect of their ongoing demands regarding understaffing. The strike will conclude at 6 a.m. on Monday and is part of a series of actions taken over the past week.

The union emphasized that if there is no meaningful response from the government or the coastal industry, they may escalate to a general strike affecting the entire coastal shipping sector. Crew members are reportedly overworked, leading to exhaustion and burnout due to chronic staff shortages.

In an unusual turn of events, seven court rulings declaring the strike illegal were issued within just six days, marking a significant development in Greece’s labor history. The union remains firm in its stance, advocating for better working conditions and adequate staffing to ensure the safety and well-being of its members.
