The search and rescue operation for the missing crew member of the sunken cargo ship MV Jerlyn Khatness continues in Lavezares, Northern Samar. The vessel sank on December 30, prompting the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Northern Samar station to deploy personnel to find Andres Bulanon, the chief engineer of the ship. Despite the efforts of the Coast Guard and other responders, one crew member lost his life in the tragic incident, while 13 others were rescued. The search for Bulanon is ongoing, with rough seas hampering rescue efforts.
The PCG has assigned around 30 personnel to lead the search for the missing crew member, with assistance from local disaster risk and management offices. The ship, which was built in 1993 and had a gross tonnage of 199, was carrying a cargo of cement from Cebu when it sank near Barangay Balicuatro due to large waves. Crew members reported seeing Bulanon swimming after the incident, but rough seas dispersed them in different directions, complicating the search operation.
Mariners have been urged to report any sightings of the missing crew member or debris, while ships and watercraft transiting Northern Samar are advised to take precautionary measures. Despite the challenges posed by big waves in the area, the PCG is intensifying its efforts to locate Bulanon and bring closure to the tragic maritime incident. The community remains hopeful for a successful outcome as the search and rescue mission continues in the waters of Northern Samar.
