The Trøndelag Police District in Norway has arrested the second officer of the feeder ship NCL Salten, which ran aground Thursday morning near a house along the fjord. The officer, a Ukrainian citizen in his 30s, admitted to falling asleep while on watch and has been charged with "negligent navigation" under Norwegian law, which mandates safe navigation to prevent harm to life, health, and the environment.
Initial tracking data indicated the vessel entered Trondheim fjord normally at around 16 knots but failed to turn as required, grounding after 5:00 AM. The investigation is ongoing, focusing on whether the crew adhered to work and rest regulations. The ship’s captain is also listed as a suspect, and police have begun reviewing the vessel’s log and other documents.
Attempts to refloat the 443-foot containership were unsuccessful, prompting geotechnical investigations due to reports of a possible landslide near the grounding site. Damage to the vessel’s forecastle and ballast tanks has been noted, though it is not severe enough to complicate rescue efforts. The Norwegian Coastal Administration is monitoring the situation and has pollution control measures in place, while the shipping company is responsible for salvage arrangements.
