In London, Tanzania and Qatar have formalized their cooperation by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on the mutual recognition of seafarers’ certificates. The signing took place on November 24, 2025, during the 34th Session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly, attracting senior officials and various stakeholders from the maritime industry.
The agreement was signed by Mr. Mohamed Malick Salum, Director General of the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), and Engineer Abdulaziz Abdullah Al-Sulait, Assistant Undersecretary at Qatar’s Ministry of Transport. This MoU is designed to improve competency standards, safety, and quality within the seafaring profession, while also strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries.
One of the key benefits of the MoU is the expansion of employment opportunities for Tanzanian seafarers on Qatari-registered vessels, eliminating the need for repetitive certificate validation. This arrangement is expected to enhance collaboration in maritime transport and facilitate access to more competitive global labor markets for Tanzanian seafarers.
Additionally, the agreement will provide Tanzanian maritime training institutions with greater international recognition, thereby improving their capacity and allowing seafarers to benefit from advanced technologies and high safety standards.
