NewSpace India to Install Satellite Terminals for Improved Communication in Indian Waters

NewSpace India Ltd, the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro), is undertaking a project to improve communication with vessels in the sea and enhance monitoring of Indian waters. The company plans to install mobile satellite service (MSS) terminals on approximately 100,000 motorised and fishing boats across 13 coastal states. The selected private vendors will be responsible for supplying, installing and commissioning the MSS terminals for vessel communication and support system. The project also includes the establishment of a dedicated MSS satcom network, ground stations and satellite terminals for better security and improved national security.

The project proposal document outlines the scope of work, which involves setting up a dedicated MSS satcom network to support emergency communication and tracking of maritime assets Xponders. It also mentions the establishment of 9m/11m C-band ground stations and hub baseband systems, arranging satellite bandwidth, obtaining required service approvals, and building satellite terminals for field deployment across nine coastal states and four union territories. The system will be powered by India’s own navigation satellite system, NavIC, launched by Isro recently.

The network will be used to form a two-way communication system with fishermen, allowing authorities to access their locations periodically. It will also enable the issuance of emergency weather alerts and alerts for international water border violations. Additionally, it will provide accurate navigation alerts to ensure the safety and security of the fishermen in Indian waters. All Xponders will have in-built wifi and bluetooth transceivers for communication. A multilingual app is also being developed to facilitate communication between the app and transponders.

By implementing this project, NewSpace India aims to establish better communication channels with vessels at sea and enhance the monitoring of Indian waters. The use of NavIC as the power source for the system highlights India’s reliance on its own technology for national security purposes. Overall, this initiative will enhance the safety and security of fishermen and improve the effectiveness of national security in coastal areas.
