Intellian Technologies and Inmarsat Maritime have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop a next-generation GMDSS safety terminal. The terminal will operate over Inmarsat’s ELERA L-band network and will become the standard product for Inmarsat Maritime’s next-generation Fleet Safety service. It will meet the requirements and performance standards of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and will include GMDSS, LRIT, and SSAS capabilities. The new terminal aims to enhance the safety of seafarers by improving both preventative and reactive communications.

The GMDSS terminal will feature a Distress Chat function that automatically alerts the nearest Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in case of an emergency on board. It will also notify nearby vessels, creating a network of support during critical situations. Intellian CEO Eric Sung expressed pride in the development of the new terminal and the partnership with Inmarsat, highlighting the potential for improved safety for seafarers and passengers. Peter Broadhurst, Senior Vice President Safety & Regulatory at Inmarsat Maritime, emphasized the significance of the collaboration in enhancing maritime safety and protecting lives at sea.
