Nokia and Telenet, a subsidiary of Liberty Global, collaborated to trial new use cases aimed at improving the safety of shipping operations at the port of Antwerp in Belgium. The trial, conducted in partnership with ship management company Seafar NV and R&D hub imec, utilized Telenet’s standalone 5G network slicing technology and Nokia’s Network-as-Code platform to deliver high-definition video streams to remotely located captains, enabling them to manoeuvre vessels through busy areas.
The trial leveraged real-time data and ultra-low latency network capabilities to increase the safety and efficiency of maritime operations. Imec deployed high-definition cameras and sensors to provide high-quality video feeds to vessels approaching areas requiring increased situational awareness. Additionally, imec provided edge application middleware integrated into Seafar’s shore control centre. The partnership represents a real-life implementation of the GSMA’s Open Gateway initiative, promoting the standardization of APIs for developers to accelerate new innovations in the maritime industry.
