Norwegian transport operator Torghatten and Kongsberg Maritime have partnered to develop a system for self-driving ferries on the Flakk-Rørvik route in Trøndelag county, central Norway. The car ferry service is part of the Norwegian highway network, connecting Trondheim with communities on the Fosen peninsula. Kongsberg Maritime will install technologies for auto-docking, auto-crossing, collision avoidance, and situational awareness on the ferries. These systems aim to reduce fuel consumption, enhance safety and punctuality, and optimize staffing in compliance with maritime regulations.
Through various pilot projects, Kongsberg Maritime has demonstrated the applicability of its remote and autonomous technologies to coastal or inland waterway vessel types. The collaboration with Torghatten will bring these advanced technologies to the ferry service, benefiting both the operators and passengers. The implementation of these systems is expected to improve operational efficiency, reduce costs, and ensure a more reliable and sustainable transportation service in the region. This initiative represents a significant step towards the future of autonomous maritime transportation in Norway.
