In 2004, Mike Watts met with Princess Cruises to discuss adapting a shore power system, unknowingly embarking on a career that would significantly impact emissions reduction in the cruise industry. Over two decades later, Watts is recognized as a pioneer in this field, with his company, Watts Marine, leading the charge in installing shore power systems across North America. By September 2024, all three cruise berths at Seattle’s Port were equipped with shore power, thanks to a $44 million investment. This technology allows ships to connect to the Seattle City Light grid, which sources 94% of its power from clean resources, significantly reducing air emissions.

Watts initially ventured into shore power through a project with Princess Cruises, which had launched the first shore power system in Juneau, Alaska, in 2001. His experience in high-voltage projects led him to develop a scalable solution for other ports. The first implementation at Seattle’s Terminal 30 was completed in just six months, a remarkable feat for such projects. This success opened doors for further collaborations, with the Port of Seattle aiming for all home port cruise ships to connect by 2027.

Watts has over 30 years in the electrical industry and founded Cochran Marine in 2005 to focus on shore power. After acquiring Cochran Marine and launching Watts Marine in 2021, he installed multiple systems across North America. The demand for shore power surged post-COVID, reflecting the industry’s shift toward greener operations. Despite facing challenges, such as limited space and infrastructure, innovative solutions were implemented to successfully establish shore power at Pier 66.

Today, Watts Marine provides shore power systems for various marine vessels, including cruise ships and ferries. Watts credits Princess Cruises for their early vision and collaboration in advancing clean port operations, emphasizing the potential for continued growth and innovation in the industry.
