The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has revealed that approximately 4,000 ocean-going vessels visit the country’s seaports each year. The managing director of NPA, Mohammed Bello-Koko, stated that a minimum of 6,000 seafarers visit the seaports every month, resulting in over 72,000 seafarers annually. Bello-Koko emphasized the need for collaborations with global institutions like the Mission to Seafarers (MTS) to promote shore leave and crew change, as well as to benefit coastal tourism.

Bello-Koko highlighted the importance of Nigeria’s maritime trade and the potential for growth in the country’s blue economy. He mentioned the improvements in inland traffic and intermodal transportation, facilitated by the advancing rail system, which will stimulate opportunities in the maritime ecosystem. As a coastal nation and the sub-regional economic powerhouse, Nigeria aims to deepen its port competitiveness and attract necessary opportunities to cater to its growing population.

The managing director assured the MTS of the NPA’s unwavering commitment to improving seafarers’ welfare in Nigeria. He emphasized that seafarers are highly treasured assets, and this intervention is just the beginning of many more initiatives to come. The NPA aims to continuously enhance the welfare of seafarers and establish a positive image and reputation for the nation.

Overall, the NPA recognizes the significant number of seafarers visiting Nigeria’s seaports and the potential economic benefits they bring. They are committed to collaborating with global institutions and improving seafarers’ welfare to attract more opportunities and enhance the country’s port competitiveness.
