To upgrade Aatma Nirbhar Bharat, two huge reactors weighing about 1,160 megatons (MT) and 663 MT were transported via National Waterway 2 from Surat in Gujarat to the Numaligarh refinery in Assam.

Assam Prime Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the news on his official Twitter account, writing: “This is an excellent development. Before 2014, who would not have thought that heavy industrial machinery would be transported from Gujarat to Assam by water rather than by highway? #NewIndia”

Meanwhile, Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, said waterways are becoming the new India. On his Twitter account, he wrote: “Waterways will become the new highways of #NewIndia. The efforts of Honorable Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji have rejuvenated the sector and this is just the beginning of an exciting future. #Gatishakti”

Sonowal also said that with the opening of Myanmar’s Sittwe Port, Northeast India is poised to transform its transport sector.

The port was built as part of the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project (KMTTP) with grants from the Government of India. It will provide an alternative route to international sea routes for inland North East India.
