Ocean Network Express (ONE) has announced a major investment in methanol dual-fueled containerships as part of its $20 billion fleet and operations strategy for 2030. The new vessels, with a capacity of 13,000 TEU, are being designed by two Chinese shipyards and are expected to be delivered in 2027. ONE sees these ships as a significant milestone in its Green Strategy, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve fuel efficiency.
This order comes as ONE continues to expand its fleet, with recent deliveries of ultra-large boxships and previous orders for conventional-fueled containerships. The company is also hedging its move toward alternative fuels by ordering ammonia/methanol-ready containerships. CEO Jeremy Nixon has emphasized that these investments are driven by customer demand and are part of ONE’s long-term strategy to evolve into a vessel owner. The company currently ranks as the sixth largest carrier with a capacity of approximately 1.8 million TEU, and it aims to invest in 150,000 TEU of capacity annually.
The new methanol dual-fuel containerships are part of ONE’s commitment to sustainability and its goal to deploy its first alternative fuel vessel by 2030. The company is also focused on adapting to future changes in the global market, and it sees these new vessels as playing a key role in reaching its sustainable goals.
