Over the weekend, a Panamax bulker collided with a moored Kamsarmax at the port of Tarragona, Spain, causing significant damage to the vessel. The incident occurred when the 80,000 dwt bulker Karpaty arrived at Tarragona on June 14th and docked in the inner harbor. On June 17th, the 75,000 dwt Elena Ve, loaded with corn and traveling from Ukraine, entered the harbor and approached the Karpaty. During the maneuvering process, the bow of the Elena Ve collided with the port side of the moored vessel.

Photos from the scene reveal extensive hull damage to the Karpaty amidships. Fortunately, the vessel remains intact below the waterline and in all machinery spaces, ensuring stability and eliminating the risk of further harm. The Elena Ve sustained limited damage to the bulwarks on her starboard bow. Fortunately, no injuries or pollution were reported as a result of the collision.

In response to the incident, the port activated its contingency plans, although no emergency response was necessary. Tugs assisted the Elena Ve in moving to a nearby berth for inspection. An ongoing investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the collision.

The Elena Ve is a Panamax bulker built in 2010 with a deadweight tonnage of 75,000. In June 2022, during a port state control inspection, numerous deficiencies were discovered on board, including issues with propulsion and auxiliary engines, fire safety shortcomings, and cracking in the bulkheads. It remains to be seen whether these deficiencies played a role in the collision.

As the investigation continues, authorities will work to determine liability and assess the extent of the damage. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of proper vessel maneuvering and adherence to safety protocols in busy ports to prevent similar accidents in the future.
