Sampriti Bhattacharyya, an Indian-origin entrepreneur, has made waves in the maritime industry with her innovative electric hydrofoil boat, the Navier 30. However, her journey to success was filled with obstacles, including academic setbacks, cultural barriers, and financial hardships. Despite these challenges, Sampriti’s passion for engineering and entrepreneurship drove her to achieve remarkable feats.

Growing up in Kolkata, India, Sampriti faced discouragement from her teacher after failing physics, who suggested she become a housewife. Undeterred, she pursued her dream of studying engineering at Jadavpur University. Despite facing rejection from 539 out of 540 internship applications, she eventually secured a position at Fermilab, a renowned particle physics laboratory in the United States. This opportunity ignited her love for physics.

Inspired by Steve Jobs, Sampriti adopted the philosophy that “the world is built by people no smarter than you and I.” With determination, she moved to the United States with minimal funds and pursued a master’s degree at Ohio State University. Later, she joined MIT to pursue a PhD, during which she developed an underwater drone called Hydroswarm.

In 2020, Sampriti co-founded Navier, a company aiming to revolutionize watercraft. Their flagship product, the Navier 30, combines hydrofoils, electrification, advanced composites, and intelligent software to create innovative, high-speed vessels. The Navier 30’s airplane-like structure and three submerged wings allow it to effortlessly glide above water, enabling swift navigation.

Sampriti’s vision extends beyond technological innovation. She aims to make boating more accessible, affordable, and sustainable while minimizing the environmental impact of marine transport. Her journey has garnered recognition, support, and praise from investors, media outlets, and influencers, including a feature on Nas Daily. Despite her achievements, Sampriti maintains a resilient spirit, joking that if Fermilab had rejected her, she would have emailed another 500 companies.

Sampriti Bhattacharyya’s story is a testament to perseverance, determination, and creative thinking. She defied societal expectations and forged her own path towards success. Her advice to others is simple: “Don’t let anyone tell you what you can or cannot do. Just go out there and do it.” Sampriti serves as an inspiration for those who aspire to follow their dreams and make a significant impact on the world.
