Kabayan Party-list Rep. Ron Salo has outlined the key features of the proposed Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers, which is set to be signed into law as early as next week. The legislation aims to advance and safeguard the rights and well-being of Filipino seafarers, following years of hard work in Congress. Salo, as the chairman of the Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs, led the House contingent in the Bicameral Conference Committee meetings and the reconciled House and Senate version of the bill has several provisions aimed at addressing the nefarious practice of ambulance-chasing among Filipino seafarers.

The proposed Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers includes provisions such as the institutionalization of a Department of Health-accredited physician in determining disability grading, provision of free legal assistance to seafarers, and addressing the lack of shipboard training for local maritime graduates. Salo expressed his gratitude to the Senate counterparts for their support in promoting the protection of seafarers’ rights and welfare, and the measure is expected to be ratified by both chambers and subsequently submitted for the President’s approval. Salo believes that the passage of this law will not only benefit seafarers, but also revitalize the entire seafaring industry and ultimately benefit the entire country.
