Seafarer Salaries on the Rise as Job Market Becomes More Competitive

A recent survey conducted by crewing provider Danica has revealed that recruitment of seafarers is becoming increasingly challenging for shipowners. The survey found that 70 percent of crewing managers and shipmanagement professionals reported that their work has become more difficult in the past two years, with almost half stating that it has become harder to find qualified crewmembers. As a result of the competitive market, salaries for seafarers are on the rise, with 60 percent of shipping firms reporting that they have increased wages for officers and ratings, and senior officers seeing increases of 10-30 percent.

The survey also found that crewing managers believe that pay is the main reason for employees changing jobs, a sentiment that is echoed by 80 percent of seafarers who completed Danica’s crewmember survey. Henrik Jensen, CEO of Danica, commented on the survey results, noting that the shortages of competent sea staff, particularly in certain ranks, are impacting crewing strategies for shipping firms. He also highlighted the recognition among ship owners and managers that salary levels need to increase in order to recruit and retain top talent.

Overall, the survey results demonstrate the significant challenges that shipowners and crewing managers are facing in recruiting qualified seafarers, and the increasing importance of competitive salaries in retaining top talent within the industry.
