Mumbai recently hosted the ISWAN seminar 2024 at the Maritime Training Institute (SCI) on November 28th, where maritime stakeholders gathered to address pressing issues affecting seafarers and their families. With over 150 participants, including maritime executives, policymakers, shipping managers, charities, seafarers, their families, and academics, discussions covered a range of topics such as family support, fraudulent crew agents, and the impact of decarbonization on seafarers’ well-being. The seminar kicked off with a welcome from Mr. Deepak Shetty, IRS (Retired), Former Secretary to the Government of India, Director General Shipping, and ISWAN Trustee, emphasizing the importance of industry collaboration in improving welfare initiatives.
High-ranking guests, including Prof. (Dr.) Tanuja Kaushik from Gujarat Maritime University and Captain JC Anand, Chairman Emeritus of Indian Register of Shipping, shared their insights on legal complexities in the maritime sector and the importance of education and ethical practices in maritime operations. Mr. Rene Anderson, CEO of Sea Health and Welfare, highlighted the need for holistic welfare approaches for seafarers, emphasizing the collaboration between ISWAN and Sea Health. Mr. Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, Director General Shipping, India, focused on regulatory measures to support seafarers, highlighting efforts to digitize grievance redressal mechanisms.
Panel discussions at the seminar covered topics such as family support in seafaring, the impact of recruitment scams on Indian seafarers, and the effects of decarbonization on seafarers’ well-being. The panels included experts from various sectors discussing strategies to strengthen family systems, protect seafarers from exploitation, and balance environmental goals with seafarers’ welfare. The event also saw important market launches and partnerships, including the Family Outreach Program launch in India, GMU-ISWAN Research Report publication, and the MoU signing with Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) to improve mental well-being for seafarers and their families. The seminar concluded with remarks from Mr. Simon Grainge, Managing Director of ISWAN, and a vote of thanks from Mr. Chirag Bahri, International Operations Manager at ISWAN.
