The International Day of the Seafarer, observed on June 25, focuses on safety onboard ships. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) launched a campaign to highlight the important role of seafarers in ensuring the maritime sector remains a safe workplace. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Antonio Dominguez commended seafarers for their dedication and expertise in keeping the world’s largest transportation methods running smoothly while emphasizing the need for their experience in shaping the future of shipping.

Dominguez recognized the bravery of seafarers who face challenges such as piracy and conflict zones, attributing the stability of the global supply chain to their professionalism. He urged seafarers worldwide to participate in the campaign by sharing photos and safety recommendations as part of this year’s International Day of the Seafarers. By joining the safety conversation and offering insights on technological advancements, mental well-being, and workplace safety practices, seafarers can contribute to promoting safety at sea.

The Day of the Seafarer was established in 2010 to promote the revised Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping Convention. This day encourages governments, shipping organizations, companies, and other stakeholders to actively celebrate and promote the important role of seafarers. Dominguez invited seafarers to share their safety practices and innovative approaches to enhancing maritime safety and security on social media using the hashtag #SafetyTipsAtSea.
