Seaspan Conference Offers Encouragement to Ukrainian Seafarers

Container shipping fleet management company Seaspan Corporation recently held its European seafarer’s conference in Constanta, Romania. The event brought together maritime industry professionals from three continents and was organized by Seaspan’s regional manning office in Odesa, Ukraine. The conference aimed to address the challenges faced by the industry due to the war in Ukraine, which has led to many Ukrainian seafarers relocating to Romania and other EU countries. Seaspan has experienced significant growth in recent years and is undertaking a massive newbuilding program, which will make it one of the largest containership owners in the world. The company is focused on digitization and decarbonization as critical policy objectives for the future.

Seaspan Chief Operating Officer Torsten Pedersen emphasized the importance of maintaining the company’s culture as it grows. He stated that Seaspan’s recruitment policy will not change and that experienced employees will help new hires become embedded in the company’s culture. Captain Manoj Gandhi, Director of Fleet Personnel at Seaspan Crew Management, discussed the company’s accelerated growth strategy for seafaring personnel. He highlighted the concept of inclusive growth, which aims to benefit all employees. Seaspan has planned for the additional staffing requirements that come with its fleet expansion and has implemented cadetship programs and promotions to meet these needs. The company is also making shipboard modifications to accommodate more women seafarers.
