The Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, has invited Indian ambassadors from the East and West Zones to explore investment opportunities in the Indian maritime sector. Over 45 Indian missions, including those from countries such as the USA, UK, and Russia, participated in the virtual meeting. Sonowal highlighted the upcoming Global Maritime India Summit (GMIS) in 2023 and urged ambassadors to encourage participation from their respective governments and corporates. India’s progress in the maritime domain, characterized by a commitment to 100% Foreign Direct Investment, was emphasized, with potential investment of over INR 10 lakh crore ($12,000 million) expected to drive economic transformation. Sonowal invited investors to explore opportunities in diverse industries, such as cruise tourism, shipbuilding, and maritime education.
Secretary T K Ramachandran discussed the goals of GMIS, including advancements in ports and interior waterways, partnerships with foreign businesses, and meeting unique trade requirements. Additional Secretary Periasamy Kumaran highlighted the transformative phase in India’s ports and shipping industry and discussed how Indian missions can aid in business networking, matchmaking, and serving as information hubs. The meeting showcased collaboration and commitment to maritime excellence, with a focus on promoting international cooperation and driving economic growth for India through foreign investment and partnerships.
